Maps and Other Printed Resources:
Natural Resources Canada (Free): an FTP site that contains the entire 1:50,000 and 1:2500,000 series of topographic maps produced by the Department of Energy Mines and Resources, Canada. They can be downloaded for free, and are scanned to a resolution of 300 d.p.i. These are the most frequently used maps for canoers and other wilderness travellers in remote sections of Canada.
FedPubs: An excellent source for topographic maps , canoeing guides, and limited edition publications (such as "Wanapitei: the Canoe Trippers' Cookbook").
Atlas of Canada: Canada sector topographic maps (1956-1987). Available to download for free. Great for trip planning, but not ideal for navigation.
Toporama and new Toporama site: Free canadian topographic map images. Great site for trip planning.
Geographical Names of Canada: database plus articles on the origins of geographic names, research projects, aboriginal placenames and the Canadian Society for the Study of Names.
Google Earth and NASA World Wind: Both are free programs for viewing satellite imagery.
Chrismar Adventure Maps: custom-designed map-making of all types. Publisher of The Adventure Map series of original, waterproof, up-to-date, topographic maps of Canada's National Parks, Provincial Parks and other popular wilderness recreation areas.
Cartes et Informations de Plein Air (Canot-Cartes): an extensive list of canoe route maps for popular rivers in Quebec, Maine, New York, the Yukon, and elsewhere. Many of the map descriptions are in French.
