Photo Diary (2009): Dempster Highway to the Arctic (Bicycle Touring)

Crazy Guy on Bike Website – The north is like another country. The northern people are more polite and civil than the people in Vancouver and the northern customs and culture clearly distinguish northern people from the savage barbarians in the southern cities (like Vancouver, for example). On the way to Inuvik on the Dempster Highway you will be cycling on the land of the Gwich’in people and in Inuvik you will also find Inuvialuit people (not to be confused with the Inuit of the eastern arctic). English is commonly spoken and you will not need your Inuvialuktun and Gwich’in phrasebooks in Inuvik. I was surprised to find trees growing so far north. Inuvik is the place where the tree line extends furthest north into the arctic. To the east the tree line is hundreds of kilometers further south.
