Province announces $87 million more for northern highway construction

Vancouver Sun – British Columbia will spend $87 million more on northern highways, creating new jobs in the process, Premier Gordon Campbell and Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond announced Wednesday. The money will be divided among 51 projects, including railway crossings, resurfacing, paving, bridge replacement and repairing erosion damage. “This will be one of the busiest highway construction seasons in the North on record,” Campbell said in a news release. Including the $87 million, more than $200 million has now been committed to new and continuing highway projects across the North, with some of the previously announced funding coming from the federal government as well as local governments, the release said. In total, these projects are expected to create more than 1,200 direct jobs. Across the province, almost 400 transportation infrastructure projects are scheduled this year.
