1908 Harry Whitney Arctic hunting expedition: photos go from Arctic to album to attic to eBay

New Haven Register – For the past 15 years, Francis Boucher had ignored a photo album tucked away in a cedar chest in his attic, figuring it was “just a bunch of Eskimo pictures.” “I didn’t realize what I had,” said Boucher in an interview from his home in Tolland. But now he has offered the album for sale on eBay and hopes to draw a bid of up to $8,000 to help pay for his daughter’s third year of nursing school. The album contains 85 photos from a 1908 expedition to the Arctic by Harry Whitney of New Haven.

Boucher’s big realization occurred about two weeks ago when he was putting away his Christmas decorations. He accidentally came across the album, which he had seen many years earlier after his parents passed it down to him. “This time, I started really looking at their historical value,” he said. “I was surprised and kind of excited. It’s one of those things you stick in a box and forget about.”  In an e-mail announcing his discovery, Boucher said, “The book documents Harry Whitney’s expedition with the Inuit Eskimo to the north and south of Etah (Greenland), along the Arctic frontier and overwintering in Annoatok.”
