Oilsands emissions underestimated, report claims

The Canadian Press (Bob Weber) – A new industry report claims greenhouse gas emissions from the oilsands are being underestimated by nearly a quarter by government and industry. The report by Global Forest Watch, to be released today, says official estimates don’t account for carbon released as forest cover is cut and peatlands disturbed. Peter Lee, one of the authors of the report, says it adds up to a significant amount of greenhouse gases that will be emitted, particularly because of peatland destruction. Industry figures say oilsands facilities release about 36 megatonnes of carbon dioxide. The study says that when the forests cut and peatlands disturbed are considered, emissions from the oilsands increase by nearly one-quarter.
