Sustainable Northern Shelter (Cold Climate Housing Research Center)

The Arctic Sounder – Ilisagvik College, Tagiugmiullu Nunamiullu Housing Authority (TNHA) and the Cold Climate Housing Research Center (CCHRC) have embarked on a project to build an Arctic dream home — highly energy-efficient, 1,000 square feet and with construction costs of no more than $150,000. The dream came true on time and under budget in Anaktuvuk Pass this summer. Ilisagvik College developed a class, “Sustainable Northern Shelter Construction” to build the home, TNHA provided land, supervision on the project, and covered the bulk of the costs in conjunction with the HUD 05 grant awarded to Ilisagvik College.
