Science Poles: Interview with Igor Krupnik on IPY (Two Parts)

Science Poles – Dr. Igor Krupnik, Ph.D., is cultural anthropologist and curator of Arctic and Northern ethnology collections at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.  In Part I, Dr. Krupnik discusses the important contributions of the social sciences to the fourth IPY, in particular how social scientists have advanced the idea of reciprocity between researchers and indigenous communities when conducting research in their backyard.  In Part II, he reflects on the success of social scientists’ participation in IPY 2007-2008 and looks forward to the IPY Oslo Conference in June 2010, which will be the first opportunity for all scientists who participated in the IPY to interact with one another.
