Description: "Lands Forlorn is an account of the 1911-12 expedition to search for minerals in the watershed of the Coppermine River above the Arctic Circle. Douglas and two companions journey to the Dease River on Great Bear Lake, winter there and make two trips to the Coppermine River and another to the Arctic coast" (Amazon).

"The object of the present unostentatious expedition was to make a preliminary investigation of the Coppermine Mountains; to determine whether there was any analogy between those deposits and those of the Lake Superior district, and to decide whether the prospect was sufficiently promising to warrant investigation on a further and more comprehensive scale.

"We considered that the success of this expedition would be best ensured by keeping the party as small and as efficient as possible.  Three of us were indispensable; provided we could have got the right kind of man, we would have preferred four in the party.  But the qualifications required in a fourth member were somewhat exacting, and the time at our disposal for choosing was short.  We left civilization decided to carry the work through with three men only.  As will be shown, a fourth member did in fact join us eventually and at a time when his assistance was most opportune and valuable" (Douglas 1914:6).
